Herbert Kickl, leader of Austria’s far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ), faces difficult coalition negotiations after securing nearly 29% of the vote in last week’s national election, falling short of a majority.

Despite the FPÖ’s strong electoral showing, forming a government is proving challenging, as major political parties, including the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), the Green Party, and the liberal NEOS, have refused to join any coalition with Kickl.

Herbert Kickl, leader of Austria’s far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ), faces difficult coalition negotiations after securing nearly 29% of the vote.

The conservative Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP), which received 26% of the vote, has expressed willingness to collaborate but only on the condition that Kickl is excluded from the government. This stipulation poses a significant roadblock for the FPÖ leader, who has been a controversial figure in Austrian politics.

Known for his promotion of conspiracy theories, including endorsing the anti-parasitic drug Ivermectin during the COVID-19 pandemic, Kickl has long been criticized by Austria’s political establishment. Even ÖVP leader and Chancellor Karl Nehammer have labeled him a “security risk,” stating that Kickl has “radicalised himself” and is “impossible to shape a state with.”

The conservative Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) has expressed willingness to collaborate, but only if Kickl is excluded from the government.

Kickl, once a campaign strategist for the FPÖ and speechwriter for the party’s former leader Jörg Haider, served as interior minister from 2017 to 2019 before the FPÖ-led government collapsed over a corruption scandal.

His party, which has deep Eurosceptic and pro-Kremlin ties, advocates lifting sanctions against Russia and opposes Western military aid to Ukraine. It has also taken a hard-line stance on immigration, calling for the “remigration of uninvited foreigners” and seeking to reclaim powers from the EU for Austria.

Kickl has long been criticized by Austria’s political establishment, with Chancellor Nehammer labeling him a ‘security risk.

With coalition talks ongoing, Austria’s political future remains uncertain as the FPÖ leader struggles to gain the necessary support for forming a government.
