On October 6, 2024, the Indian Air Force (IAF) hosted a spectacular airshow over Chennai’s iconic Marina Beach, captivating an estimated 1.5 million spectators. This event marked the IAF’s 92nd anniversary and was the first airshow in Chennai in 21 years, making it a historic occasion for both the city and the armed forces.

The airshow featured approximately 72 aircraft, including modern fighter jets such as the RafaleSukhoi 30 MKI, and the indigenously developed Tejas. Vintage aircraft like the Dakota and Harvard also took to the skies, showcasing the evolution of aerial technology. The event highlighted various formations, including:

  • Dhwaj Formation: Chetak helicopters carrying flags.
  • Puyal Formation: Rafale jets performing synchronized maneuvers.
  • Sarang Helicopter Team: Known for their intricate aerial displays.

The aerial display commenced at 11 a.m. and concluded around 1 p.m., featuring breathtaking maneuvers that left the audience in awe.

The event was graced by several dignitaries, including Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, and Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh. Their presence underscored the significance of this occasion not just for the IAF but for the entire nation.

Despite the excitement, the event was marred by tragedy as reports emerged of four fatalities linked to crowd management issues. As spectators attempted to leave simultaneously after the show, chaos ensued, leading to severe congestion on roads and at metro stations. The deceased were identified as Srinivasan (48), Karthikeyan (34), John Babu (56), and Dinesh.

Authorities had anticipated a large turnout but were unprepared for the overwhelming number of attendees. Many spectators reported difficulties accessing basic amenities such as drinking water, leading to instances of dehydration. Emergency services struggled to navigate through the crowd, further complicating rescue efforts.

The airshow entered the Limca Book of Records for attracting one of the largest crowds ever for such an event in India. Many attendees climbed onto rooftops and terraces in nearby areas to secure a better view of the aerial performances.

While the IAF’s airshow successfully showcased its capabilities and drew massive crowds, it also highlighted significant shortcomings in crowd management and emergency preparedness. As Chennai celebrated this momentous occasion, authorities are now faced with critical questions about ensuring safety at future public events.
