A joint statement from Israel’s internal security service, Shin Bet, and the police said the suspect, who has links with Turkey, was involved in at least two meetings in Iran about planning to assassinate senior leaders such as Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and head of Shin Bet.

Israeli security forces said on Thursday they detained a local businessman suspected of involvement in an assassination plot backed by Iran aimed at several prominent figures including Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Israeli security forces said on Thursday they detained a local businessman suspected of involvement in an assassination plot backed by Iran aimed at several prominent figures including Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

It occurred last month and says much of the intelligence conflicts that are paralleling the increasing tensions along Israel’s south border with Lebanon. Recently, Shin Bet exposed a plot attributed to Hezbollah towards assassinating a former senior official of the Israel’s defense. He is ex-Chief of Staff and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon.

This warning comes after a series of high-level attacks on Hezbollah. The attacks started with two days of explosions targeting communication equipment, leaving more than 30 people dead and hundreds injured. Israel has remained mum on the incidents, but security sources have confirmed Mossad, the Israeli Intelligence Agency, was responsible for the attacks.

Israel’s track record for secret missions in Iran, and even allegedly having assassinated the Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in a Tehran guesthouse a few months ago, could be quoted ad nauseam. Shin Bet said such efforts by Iran to recruit Israeli citizens into intelligence and terrorist activities had picked up specially from convicts or those with criminal records.

The alleged conspiracy traced back to April, the first point of contact between a mysterious businessman and a wealthy Iranian he was supposed to do business with. The Iranian officials stated that Adi, whose real name they would not give, could not leave the country, hence smuggled the businessman from eastern Turkey into Iran. Here, they challenged him to undertake a host of assignments ranging from money transfers to photography of crowded areas and intimidation of other Israeli operatives.

Going back to Israel, the businessman made a second trip to Iran in August, again crossing the border by smuggling. This time, he was pushed to carry out terrorist operations, such as plots for the assassination of Netanyahu and Gallant. He was refused a payment of $1 million for his services but was made a payment of 5,000 euros ($5,570) for attending the meetings, which indicates they’ll keep in contact.
